United Kingdom: Weakening protections: Amnesty International submission for the UN Universal Periodic Review – 27th Session of the UPR Working Group, May 2017

Amnesty International notes with regret that the UK has expressed an intention to replace its domestic Human Rights Act with what appears likely to be a less protective Bill of Rights, and that it has been highly critical of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in this regard. There have also been reports at the close of 2016 suggesting the government intends to withdrawn altogether from the European Convention on Human Rights should it win the next election. Further, the UK continues to take a narrow view of its extraterritorial human rights obligations .
