Kenya: Nowhere to go: Forced Evictions in Mau Forest – Briefing Paper, May 2007

In October 2006, a coalition of human rights organisations including Amnesty International, the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE), Hakijammi and the Kenya Land Alliance visited the Mau Forest Complex to investigate the extent of forced evictions. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights accompanied them. The coalition found that the Government of Kenya has failed to tackle the underlying problems which contribute to forest destruction. While it has forcibly evicted thousands of poor families from small plots, few of the powerful political actors involved in the illegal allocation of public land have been subjected to investigation and prosecution.
