The annual conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) takes place in Geneva, 6-23 June 1995. Indonesia will again come under scrutiny for its treatment of workers. AI believes that continuing violations against workers in the year since the labour riots and violent demonstrations in Medan (April 1994) suggest that much needs to be done to protect those who defend workers’ rights. The report describes restrictions on trade union activity in Indonesia. It also discusses the cases of those imprisoned after the Medan riots, three of whom remain detained. AI does not condone acts of violence committed during demonstrations but is concerned that the authorities have used the demonstrations as a pretext to intimidate and imprison those peacefully defending workers rights. Also covered are concerns about ill-treatment in arbitrary detention and the investigation into the death of Marsinah, a female factory workers murdered in May 1993.
