Amnesty International is committed to providing a website experience that is accessible for all users. Improving our website for all users is an ongoing process, and we welcome feedback about areas in which we can improve.
Conformance with WCAG
Amnesty.org partially meets the AA level of conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Given the large number of pages and documents on our site, the process of improving conformance with accessibility standards is ongoing.
Website features that support accessibility
- The site can be navigated using a keyboard and a “Skip to main content” link is available on all pages.
- ARIA landmarks are in place to aid navigation using assistive technologies.
- Users can zoom in or significantly increase the size of their browser text without any issues on most pages.
Known issues
- Page headings are not always used in a way that is consistent or hierarchical.
- Most PDFs on amnesty.org are only partially conformant with WCAG and PDF/UA accessibility standards.
- Some images have poor colour contrast or burned in text.
- Some images are missing alternative text. This is more of an issue on older webpages.
- Some videos do not have audio descriptions.
- A small number of videos do not have captions, subtitles or transcripts. In other cases, these are auto generated, which may affect the accuracy of the descriptions available.
- Most of the content on our website is not written using plain English and requires an advanced reading level.
- Some content that is embedded from third party platforms is not as accessible. This includes infographics, videos and audio. These issues are more noticeable on old webpages. We are now seeking to reduce the use of third party embedded content, especially from less accessible platforms.
- See https://github.com/amnestywebsite/humanity-theme/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3Aaccessibility for a list of technical accessibility issues that we are currently working on.
