Website Terms of Use

1. About these terms

These terms govern your use of our website and any related pages, forms, campaigns, petitions, donation pages, registration pages or online services we operate that link to these terms (together, the “site”).

They do not apply to websites or services run by other Amnesty International organisations or third parties unless those websites or services say that these terms apply. Those organisations may have their own terms.

By using our site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

We may update these terms from time to time. See section 15 below.

2. About us

This site is operated by Amnesty International Limited (company number 01606776), registered in England and Wales, with its registered office at 1 Easton Street, London WC1X 0DW, United Kingdom.

When we say “Amnesty International”, “we”, “us” or “our”, we mean Amnesty International Limited.

3. Using our site

You agree to use our site in a lawful and responsible way. This includes not:

  • interfering with the operation or security of the site
  • trying to access areas or systems without permission
  • introducing viruses, malicious code or harmful material
  • using the site in a way that could harm our work, users or reputation
  • impersonating another person or organisation, or misrepresenting your connection with Amnesty International
  • using Amnesty International names, logos, trade marks or content in a way that is misleading or suggesting endorsement without permission
  • using automated tools, scraping, data-mining or similar technologies to access, copy, monitor or extract content or data from the site unless we have allowed this or the law permits it
  • collecting, harvesting or misusing personal data or contact details from the site
  • manipulating petitions, campaign actions, forms, registrations, donations or other site features, including by making false, automated, duplicate or misleading submissions
  • trying to bypass security controls, access controls, rate limits or other protective measures

We may block, suspend, restrict, rate-limit or challenge access to the site where we reasonably believe these terms have been breached, or where this is necessary to protect the site, users, our systems or our work. You must not try to evade those controls.

You are responsible for losses we suffer that are a direct and reasonably foreseeable result of your breach of these terms or misuse of the site.

4. Children and young people

Our site is not specifically aimed at children, but we know that children and young people may care deeply about human rights and may want to take part in our work.

If you are under 13, please do not provide personal information to us unless a parent or guardian has given consent. If you are aged 13 to 18, we encourage you to involve a parent or guardian before sharing personal information, donating, registering or taking part in activities. We may apply extra safeguards or restrict some features where appropriate.

5. Content on our site

Our site is designed to:

  • provide information about human rights issues and Amnesty International’s work; and
  • enable people to engage with campaigns, actions and other activities.

The content on our site is provided for general information and engagement only. While we aim to keep it accurate and up to date, we do not guarantee that it is always complete, accurate, current or suitable for your particular circumstances.

We do not guarantee that any campaign, petition, action or activity will achieve a particular outcome.

You should not rely on our content as a substitute for professional advice.

6. User content

Some parts of our site may allow you to submit or share content (for example, comments, campaign actions, petition messages, images, stories, registrations or other contributions).

When you do so, you confirm that your content:

  • is your own or that you have permission to use it
  • is not unlawful, harmful, abusive, defamatory or misleading
  • does not infringe anyone else’s rights
  • does not include someone else’s personal information unless you have a lawful reason and their permission to share it
  • does not expose you or anyone else to safety, security, legal or other serious risks

You are responsible for what you share. Please do not submit confidential information or information that could put you or anyone else at risk unless we have specifically asked for it through a secure and appropriate channel.

We may remove content or restrict access if it breaches these terms or is otherwise inappropriate.

You give Amnesty International a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free permission to host, use, copy, store, publish, edit, translate, moderate, archive and share content you submit where reasonably needed for campaign, advocacy, research, reporting, educational, fundraising, promotional, moderation, safety, legal, record-keeping, operational and technical purposes. We will consider safety, context and any choices or permissions presented when you submit the content.

7. Intellectual property

Amnesty International, our licensors or other rights holders own the intellectual property rights in the content on our site, unless stated otherwise.

All rights in Amnesty International names, logos and trade marks are reserved. You must not use them without our permission.

You may view the site and download or print reasonable extracts for your own personal, non-commercial use, provided you keep any copyright, trade mark, attribution and other rights notices intact and do not use the content in a misleading or harmful way. Unless authorised by us or permitted by an applicable licence, you must not scrape, data-mine, train artificial intelligence systems on, commercially exploit, remove rights notices from, or use our content in a way that suggests Amnesty International endorses you, your organisation, your products, services, views or activities.

8. Permissions and Creative Commons content

Some Amnesty International content may be available under Creative Commons 4.0 licences or other permissions, but only where this is stated on our permissions page or with the content.

If you use that content, you must follow the relevant licence or permission terms. This may include giving proper attribution, complying with any limits on adapting the content or using it for commercial purposes, and respecting any exclusions.

Creative Commons permissions do not apply to Amnesty International names, logos or trade marks, third-party content, content credited to someone else, personal data, software or code, content that is stated to be excluded, or any use that would mislead people about Amnesty International’s position or endorsement.

If you use information from our site, you may wish to consider making a donation to support Amnesty International’s future research and campaigning.

Our site may contain links to, or integrations with, third-party websites, social media platforms, video platforms, event platforms, payment providers, petition tools or other services.

These are provided for convenience and engagement only. We do not control those third-party services and are not responsible for their content, availability, security, services or how they use personal data. Their own terms and privacy policies will apply.

10. Privacy and data protection

When you use our site, we may collect and use personal information as explained in our Privacy Policy and Cookie Statement.

This may include technical information such as IP addresses, device and browser information, operating system, pages visited, links clicked, dates and times of visits, cookie identifiers and similar online identifiers. Additionally, such information may be collected by our third party payment providers under their terms and conditions.

11. Donations, payments and registrations

Some parts of the site may allow you to make donations or other payments, or to register for events, activities or services. Please follow the instructions given at the time.

Payments may be processed by third-party payment providers, banks or platforms. Their terms and privacy information may also apply. We do not store your full card details.

We may refuse, cancel, return or hold donations, payments, registrations or actions where we reasonably consider this necessary because of an error, suspected fraud, misuse, legal restriction, safety concern, eligibility issue or breach of these terms.

12. Monitoring and security

To protect our site, users, systems and work, we may monitor use of the site and related technical information, including:

  • IP addresses, device and browser information, operating system and similar technical details
  • pages visited, links clicked, dates and times of visits, cookie identifiers and similar online identifiers

We may use this information where necessary and proportionate to:

  • keep the site, our systems, users and information secure
  • prevent or respond to misuse, fraud, cyber incidents, unauthorised access or suspicious activity
  • block, suspend, restrict, rate-limit or challenge access where this is necessary to protect the site, users, our systems or our work

We do this in line with applicable data protection laws. Our Privacy Policy and Cookie Statement explain the lawful bases we rely on, who we may share information with, including service providers and competent authorities where appropriate, and how long website and cookie information is kept. We do not monitor all use of the site or guarantee that the site will be free from misuse.

13. Availability of the site

We aim to keep our site available, accessible and functioning properly, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free.

We may:

  • update, change or remove content
  • suspend or withdraw the site or parts of it
  • carry out maintenance without notice where necessary

14. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where this would be unlawful. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.

Subject to the above:

  • the site and its content are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, and we do not guarantee that the site will always be available, secure, error-free, virus-free or free from harmful material
  • we are not responsible for loss or damage that was not reasonably foreseeable, or that arises from circumstances outside our reasonable control
  • we are not responsible for third-party websites, platforms, payment providers, user content, technical networks or services that we do not control
  • we are not responsible for loss or damage that results from your breach of these terms, misuse of the site or failure to take reasonable security precautions
  • we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as loss of data, income or reputation, except where the law does not allow us to limit or exclude liability

This reflects that the site is provided free of charge for general information and engagement.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The latest version will always be available on our site. By continuing to use the site after changes are made, you accept the updated terms.

16. Contact and complaints

If you have questions about these terms, or want to report suspected rights infringement, harmful or unlawful content, misuse of Amnesty International branding, a security concern, or another concern or complaint about the site, you can contact Amnesty International Limited, International Secretariat, 1 Easton Street, London, WC1X 0DW, UK, email [email protected], or telephone +44 (0) 20 7413 5500.

Please include enough information for us to understand the issue and identify the relevant content or activity.

17. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales will have jurisdiction, unless mandatory local law gives you the right to bring or defend proceedings elsewhere or gives you mandatory consumer protections that cannot be excluded.
