In Mexico, the right to protest has been exercised by defenders of land, territory and the environment to demand respect for their rights, including self-determination, free, prior and informed consent in the case of Indigenous Peoples, a healthy environment, information and participation in projects that may affect the environment, among others. However, the criminalisation of protest is used as part of a broad strategy of disincentivising and dismantling the defence of rights related to land, territory and the environment.
