In 2018, a new administration took power in Ethiopia after the former ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) leadership, including Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, receded from power following a four-year-long period of public protests. The protest that led to these changes started in 2014 in the Oromia region and spread to the Amhara region. For years, protestors demanded justice and equity, including an end to gross human rights abuses. When assuming power, the current administration, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, repeatedly claimed that it would end ongoing rights violations and establish a rights-respecting state for its people.
