This report updates the AI document “Preliminary findings on killings of unarmed civilians, arbitrary arrests and summary executions since 3 June 1989” (ASA 17/60/89). Serious human rights violations continue to occur in China: AI has not recorded any significant improvement since August 1989. Thousands are still imprisoned for their participation in the 1989 pro- democracy protests and arbitrary arrests, incommunicado detention without charge or trial, unfair trials and executions have continued. Martial law was lifted in Beijing in January 1990 but laws which permit such human rights abuses remain in force.
