The Governor of Tennessee has issued a one-year reprieve for Tony Von Carruthers after the lethal injection team was unable to locate a suitable vein in his body over the course of more than an hour and multiple attempts on 21 May 2026 Two days earlier, the Governor had refused clemency for Tony Carruthers, a man with serious mental disability who had been forced to represent himself at his 1996 trial. The courts rejected numerous appeals on numerous issues as the execution drew near.
