Americas: State protection mechanisms for human rights defenders

In the Americas, several countries have established national protection mechanisms as a measure to guarantee the safety of human rights defenders as well as other groups at risk, such as journalists, trade unionists and justice operators, among others. The purpose of this brief document is to present Amnesty International’s assessment of the implementation of the national mechanisms in Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. This analysis is based on Amnesty International’s monitoring of the situation of human rights defenders across the region for years and close work with local civil society organizations and social movements in each country.
