Ethiopia and Eritrea: The human rights agenda

Over 100,000 people were imprisoned and tortured for political reasons during the 17 years of the Mengistu regime. Tens of thousands « disappeared » or were killed. This report updates the May 1991 paper « Ethiopia: End of an era of brutal repression – a new chance for human rights » (AFR 25/05/91). It contains previously unpublished testimonies and photographs gathered on a recent Amnesty International visit. The present human rights situation in both Ethiopia and Eritrea is also described: hundreds of former government and military officials are reportedly detained, without charge or trial. Some could face the death penalty. The report concludes with a « human rights agenda for the future », submitted by AI to both provisional governments.
