Morocco: Human Rights Council adopts Universal Periodic Review outcome on Morocco

This is Amnesty International oral statement on the outcome of the third Universal Period Review of Morocco (UN Human Rights Council’s 36th session, 21-22 September 2017) in which it raises concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly. The organization also calls to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure, in order to ensure the right to a fair trial, such as access to a lawyer during interrogation for all suspects, and considers regrettable that Morocco has rejected recommendations to repeal Article 489 and 490 of the Penal Code prohibiting same-sex sexual relations and sexual relations outside marriage.
