Cameroon’s secret torture chambers: Human rights violations and war crimes in the fight against Boko Haram

Index Number: AFR 17/6536/2017

This report delves deeper, documenting the cases of 101 individuals who, between March 2013 and March
2017, were held incommunicado, tortured, and sometimes killed by Cameroonian security forces in facilities
run by the military and intelligence services. Despite such practices being in violation of both national and
international law, the use of torture in Cameroon’s fight against Boko Haram has become widespread and
routine, and practiced with impunity. These constitute violations of international human rights law, as well as
violations of international humanitarian law that amount to war crimes.
