The region is in the grip of a refugee crisis as internal armed conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia continue, forcing thousands to flee their countries. Many more are internally displaced. Meanwhile, elections in Uganda, DRC, Rwanda Burundi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Sudan (between 2015 and 2017) are bringing about a rise in human rights abuses including a clamp down on freedom of expression.
The Regional Office for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes leads Amnesty’s research, advocacy and campaigns for the region. We work closely with Amnesty national Sections and local partner organizations to address human rights challenges such as conflict and the shrinking space civic space, including in the context of elections.
