Hundreds of people in Moldova were detained by police following demonstrations against the Parliamentary election results in April 2009. Many reported that they were ill-treated while in detention. These events highlighted many of Amnesty International’s concerns with regard to torture and ill-treatment in police detention and exposed underlying systemic problems. The new Moldovan government needs to address systemic failures, and to commit to eliminating torture and ill-treatment in police detention.
