In 1991 the death penalty for wilful murder was re-introduced in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The last person to be executed in PNG was in 1954 but AI fears that executions could recommence. Charles Ombusu was sentenced to death for wilful murder and rape in 1995. A decision on an appeal against the conviction is due in February 1996. AI regrets the decision of the PNG parliament to extend the use of the death penalty.
