Overview
The region is in the grip of a refugee crisis as internal armed conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia continue, forcing thousands to flee their countries. Many more are internally displaced. Meanwhile, elections in Uganda, DRC, Rwanda Burundi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Sudan (between 2015 and 2017) are bringing about a rise in human rights abuses including a clamp down on freedom of expression.
