Egypt: Signing new NGO bill would be a “death warrant” for Egyptian rights groups

Egyptian president al-Sisi must not sign a new draconian bill on associations, which, if enacted, will give the government extraordinary powers over NGOs and eradicate independent civil society in Egypt, Amnesty International said today. The bill comes at a time when human rights organizations have been subjected to asset freezes, travel bans and interrogations as part of a criminal investigation that could result in life sentences for NGO leaders and staff members.
