Amnesty International delivered this statement at the Human Rights Council on March 26, 2006, during an Urgent Debate held at the request of the Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf. The statement reiterates an urgent call to protect civilians and adhere to international law in the context of the regional hostilities escalating rapidly across the Middle East. It also calls for the Human Rights Council to champion a comprehensive and sustained strategy leveraging all tools and mandates available, and insist that respect for international law and tackling impunity in a holistic manner must be the centrepiece of any resolution.
