Trial of TAYAD members in Istanbul: concern of unfair trial after alleged torture

Saycan Yalcin, a member of the executive committee of Tayad (Solidarity Association of prisoners’ relatives), was arrested in January 1991. He was taken to the Political Branch of Istanbul Police headquarters, and held incommunicado for 15 days. Saycan Yalcin was on hunger-strike during this time. He claims to have been tortured, and that his son Ersan and daugher Gulcan were tortured in his presence. He was charged in court with membership of the illegal Devrimci Sol (Revolutionary Left) and remains in prison. He claims he was forced to confess under duress. Mehmet and Semiha Guvel, Sedat Erozsoy, Muhittin Civelek and Ayse Sultan Yazlcl were also arrested and claim to have been forced confess to membership of Devrimci Sol; they have since been conditionally released.
