United Arab Emirates: Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review: Third session of the UPR Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, December 2008

In this submission, Amnesty International provides information under sections B, C and D as stipulated in the General Guidelines for the Preparation of Information under the Universal Periodic Review. Amnesty International raises concern over the death penalty and provisions cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments and the rights of migrant workers. The organisation also highlights its concerns about incommunicado detention and torture; women’s human rights, cooperation with the UN’s human rights mechanisms; restrictions on the right to freedom of expression, and human rights defenders. Amnesty International makes a number of recommendations for action by the government.
