In June 1972, the US Supreme Court issued a ruling, Furman v. Georgia, which, in effect, nullified the country’s capital laws and overturned nearly 600 death sentences. Four decades later, the USA has fallen far behind the global trend of abolition. The USA has executed 1,300 men and women since the Furman moratorium was lifted in 1976, and more than 3,000 others wait on death row. As this report concludes, the USA should ask itself why it is so far behind the rest of the world on this fundamental human rights issue.
