Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea): Human rights violations behind closed doors

This report contains the cases of North Koreans AI believes may have been detained in North Korea. Independent research and verification of information on North Korea are difficult due to restrictions on information imposed by government policies. The response by the North Korean authorities to cases raised by AI in 1993 and 1994 is given. However, AI believes that in a number of cases the information provided is unsatisfactory. The cases of a number of North Koreans forcibly returned from the Russian Federation and China are detailed. Recommendations are made to the North Korean authorities including the undertaking to treat the issue of human rights with openess and as a matter of international responsibility and accountabilty.
