Kenya: Raila Odinga, a prisoner of conscience

The above-named, aged 48 years and son of the former Vice-President of Kenya Oginga Odinga, was arrested on 4 July 1990 and detained under security regulations which provide for the indefinite detention without charge or trial of anyone held to be a threat to the security of the state. Raila Odinga is a supporter of the campaign for multi-party democracy in Kenya. Details of his arrest and imprisonment are given here. He is believed to be held in Naivasha maximum security prison, where conditions are not believed to be good. This is his third time to be detained without trial.
