South Korea: Arrest of Buddhist human rights activist

Jin-kwan is a leader of the Chogye Buddhist order and Co-Chairman of the Buddhist Human Rights Committee, who was arrested on the evening of 1 October 1997 by 20 officers of the Agency for National Security Planning (ANSP, South Korea’s intelligence agency) for alleged pro-North Korean activities. Amnesty International believes that he may have been detained for his religious and human rights activities and for the non-violent exercise of his rights to freedom of expression.
