Burundi: Conform or flee: Repression and insecurity pushing Burundians into exile

More than two years into the crisis sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision in April 2015 to stand for a third term in office, repression has become increasingly entrenched in Burundi. Security forces used excessive, and sometimes lethal, force to silence the protests that ensued. Since then Burundi has seen an upsurge of extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests and detention, torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, often targeting real or perceived opponents of the ruling party.
