On 2 May, the Court of Appeal of Mukaza in Bujumbura, Burundi, upheld the conviction of Burundian journalist Floriane Irangabiye for “undermining the integrity of the national territory”. Floriane Irangabiye has a long-standing medical condition and her health has deteriorated while in detention in Muyinga Prison. In May 2023, a formal request was submitted to the Ministry of Justice for her to be transferred back to Bujumbura, where she would be closer to her family and receive the necessary medical care. She has been in detention since her arrest in August 2022 and was convicted in violation to her right to freedom of expression.
