On 2 April 2013, after many years of discussions and negotiations, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) by an overwhelming majority. On 24 December 2014, ninety days following the date of the deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification of the Treaty, the ATT entered into force. The purpose of this document is to assist States in implementing the ATT to ensure the human rights protections contained in Article 7 are strictly applied.
