Indonesia / East Timor: Fernando de Araujo: prisoner of conscience

This paper describes the case of Fernando de Araujo, a 26-year-old East Timorese student who was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment on 25 May 1992. AI believes him to be a prisoner of conscience, detained for his peaceful political and human rights activities. He was convicted of subversive, anti-government activity by the High Court in Jakarta; the charges relate to his activities as a founder member of RENETIL, a student organization which peacefully opposes the integration of East Timor into Indonesia and, especially, his role in arranging a demonstration in Jakarta on 19 November 1991 to protest the killings at Santa Cruz, Dili, earlier that month. Appendices to this report include lists of those detained after the Dili massacre and extracts from the Anti-Subversion law.
