Uzbekistan: Lifting the siege on the truth about Andizhan

This document reports events of 12-13 May in Andizhan when armed men attacked military barracks, broke into the prison and freed hundreds of prisoners. Subsequently, thousands of civilians gathered in the city square. Security forces surrounded the demonstrators and fired indiscriminately into the crowd. The government’s version of events differs significantly from witness testimonies. Amnesty International is concerned for the safety of individuals detained in connection with these events and considers them to be at serious risk of being tortured. Those charged with criminal offences may be at risk of being tried in a manner that violates international standards.
