Enrik Islami, 28, from the town of Vlora, was reportedly arrested by police in June 1993 and detained pending trial until his death on 23 November 1994. AI does not know what charges were brought against him. He was reportedly ill-treated during detention: on the last occasion, on 23 November, he is reported to have died after being beaten for about 10 minutes. His body was taken to hospital where it was forensically examined (the results are not known to AI). AI is concerned about this and numerous other allegations of police brutality in Albania.
