USA (New Jersey): Concerns about police shootings of minority suspects in New Jersey

AI is concerned about the death of Lawrence Meyers, a 16-year-old black boy, who was shot in the back of the head by a white housing police officer (an anti-drug foot patrol officer) on 21 February 1995. Concern has been expressed that the police officer in question was inexperienced. The deceased and two others reportedly fled from the car which was under surveillance for drug dealing. According to police reports, Meyers was shot accidentally during a struggle with a police officer. However, several eye-witnesses have alleged that there was not struggle. In May 1995 a Grand Jury decided not to indict the police officer involved.
