Ngawang Choephel, a Tibetan ethno-musicologist, was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for «espionage and counter-revolutionary activities» by a Chinese court in 1996 after an unfair trial. At the time of his detention he was gathering material for the production of a film documentary about traditional Tibetan performing arts. There are now serious concerns about his state of health.
