Free Anti-Corruption Crusader Virginia Laparra

Act now: Demand the immediate release of Virginia Laparra, a brave anti-corruption prosecutor unjustly imprisoned in Guatemala.

What’s the problem?

Virginia Laparra, a renowned anti-corruption prosecutor, is being unjustly imprisoned in Guatemala. In 2018, she filed a complaint against a judge for sharing confidential information. In a striking display of retaliation, the judge accused Virginia of a crime, leading to her arrest and a four-year jail sentence.

Amnesty International has scrutinized the case and identified Virginia as a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for combating corruption and impunity in Guatemala. On June 12, 2023, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions declared her detention arbitrary under international law and demanded her immediate release – a call the Guatemalan authorities have so far dismissed.

Virginia is now facing a second trial, which could extend her sentence by an additional six to nine years.

The world can’t stand by and let this injustice continue. We must apply international pressure on the Guatemalan authorities to release Virginia Laparra and drop all charges against her.

We need you to act now. Send an email to key Guatemalan authorities, and help us turn the tide for Virginia. Your voice can make a difference!

What can you do to help?

Take action today: Demand justice for Virginia Laparra!
