Amnesty International’s Human Rights Education has just launched its free online course on Human Rights Friendly Schools. The Massive Open Online Course now available on edX provides learners with methods to apply human rights to everyday school life.
Through the course, you can explore pathways to making your school more human rights friendly. You will discover that there is no single path, but you will be equipped with tools and strategies for discovering your own pathway.
A human rights based approach to schooling involves teaching about, through and for human rights. When human rights principles are reflected throughout the school and embedded in daily actions and attitudes, human rights aren’t just instructed—they are also demonstrated. In order to claim our own human rights and to uphold the rights of others, we must be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable us to recognize and live up to those rights.
“The first noticeable change I saw among the students was one, the students were more free and ready to share their challenges with teachers, without fear of retribution or punishment. Number two, the teachers actually found it easier to handle the students because of the openness, then the whole school community felt included in the decision making.” – Mr. Enock Arabu, Teacher, Kenya, Precious Blood Secondary School.
The course will encourage you to explore areas of your school life where you can take action to make your school more human rights friendly. You’ll learn about the opportunities and challenges you may face while trying to build a rights-respecting school life and how you can build on your experience and relationships to make your school life more human rights friendly.
You’ll learn from your own experiences, and take part in discussions with other course participants to exchange ideas through the online chat forum. Be prepared for active learning, connecting with course participants from across the world, and becoming part of a global community dedicated to strengthening a human rights culture at school.
