Ahead of the meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (13-18 May 2024), Amnesty International is making a set of recommendations to parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on the proposed monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which was agreed in December 2022, at the 15th Conference of Parties of the CBD. These recommendations have the objective of ensuring that the monitoring process fully respects the rights of all those who live on lands affected by biodiversity conservation initiatives, including the rights of Indigenous Peoples to their lands and territories, to self-determination, and to consultation and free, prior and informed consent, as affirmed in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
