Yugoslavia: Sanije Gashi

Sanije Gashi, an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo province in Serbia, was arrested on or around 13 January 1992. She is editor-in-chief of the Albanian women’s magazine Kosovarja. On 16 January 1992 she was sentenced to 60 days’ imprisonment for disturbing “national and patriotic feelings”. At the time of writing she was reported to be held in a prison in Titova Mitrovica. According to reports received by AI, the charges arise from the cover of the edition of Kosovarja of 9 January 1992, which carried a text in Albanian calling for an end to persecution of ethnic Albanians. AI considers her a prisoner of conscience.
