Haiti: The human rights tragedy: human rights violations since the coup

Amnesty International has received reports of grave and systematic violations of human rights in Haiti since the coup of 29 September 1991. This paper describes killings, torture and ill-treatment, arbitrary or illegal arrests, threats and destruction of property directed against those regarded as supporters of the deposed President Aristide. Victims of repression include Catholic priests, members of religious organizations, trade unionists, grassroots activists, human rights monitors and students. Children and women are also reported to be victims of widespread abuse. Human rights violations in rural areas of Haiti, as well as in the capital Port-au-Prince, are reported. Included also is AI’s concern about refoulement of Haitian asylum-seekers by the United states.
