Guatemala: Appeals against impunity – one year on

This document updates some of the appeals cases Amnesty International issued in 1997 as part of its campaign to draw international attention to the legacy of human rights abuses in Guatemala as it emerges from a 30-year period of internal armed conflict. It also includes three additional cases which look at recent developments in judicial investigations and the continuing impunity for violators. The Historical Clarification Committee was set up in 1997 to investigate past human rights violations but AI has concerns about its various limitations. The recent murder of human rights activist Mons. Juan Gerardi also presents a threat to the historical clarification process.
