Colombia: extrajudicial execution / fear for safety: Gerardo Moreno Florez

Gerardo Moreno Florez, a leader of the Zenu indian community in the reserve of San Andres de Sotavento, was shot dead on 19 March 1993 by an unknown gunman. The killing took place during an electricity blackout and the killer managed to escape. Gerardo Moreno had been representing indians who were involved in a dispute with a local landowner. He had been detained by members of the army in April 1992 on charges of illegally carrying a revolver but charges were dropped and he was released in December 1992. A previous attempt on his life was made in September 1991.
