India: Deaths in custody in 1994

AI has long been concerned about the high number of custodial deaths reported from India. During 1994, 68 cases were reported to the organization, and increase of nearly 50% compared to 1993. Despite positive statements by the authorities, custodial violence, sometimes leading to death, continues to be widespread. This report describes eight cases in the main text; details of all 68 cases reported in 1994 are given in the appendix. The report concludes with recommendations to the Indian Government on how effectively to address the problem of custodial violence.
