Syria: Female political prisoner on hunger strike: Tuhama Mahmoud Ma’rouf

A Syrian female political prisoner, Tuhama Mahmoud Ma’rouf, currently serving a six-year prison term for her membership of the unauthorized Party for Communist Action, has been on hunger strike since 18 February 2011. Amnesty International believes that she is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression and association.
