Tunisia: Rhetoric versus reality: the failure of a human rights bureaucracy

Although the Tunisian Government has publicized its avowed commitment to promoting human rights, AI believes that the reality shows a pattern of systematic violations at variance with the Government’s rhetoric. This report describes AI’s concerns about prolonged incommunicado detention (often involving systematic falsification of records); official failure to halt or investigate torture; failure to investigate deaths in detention and disappearances; and increasing repression of Islamist and leftist groups and of human rights activists and press freedom.
