A new peace agreement was signed in August 1995 in Abuja, Nigeria, which could bring to an end the little reported but brutal war in Liberia. Since December 1989, this conflict has destabilised neighbouring countries and cause the death of an estimated 150 000 Liberians. Over 700 000 more have fled the country. This report outlines the history of this conflict and describes the human rights abuses, attributed to all factions, which have characterized it. It discusses the role of the peace keeping forces, ECOMOG and UNOMIL, and makes recommendations for the protection of human rights to all parties to the conflict, as well as to the Transitional Government and the international community.
