AI has received reports that during June 1989 army counter-insurgency units entered at least two peasant communities in Lucanas province, Ayacucho department. In Pampamarca, the villagers were made to stay in the main square for two days. Soldiers looted farmers' houses and at least 10 farmers are reported to have been killed. In Santa Ana locality four people were killed, two of them over 90 years old. Some days later three more elderly men were killed and soldiers reportedly raped young women on the church premises.
