Somalis are scapegoats in Kenya’s counter-terror crackdown

The Somali community in Kenya have become scapegoats in Kenya’s counter-terror operation known as ‘Usalama Watch’. Thousands of Somalis have been subjected to arbitrary arrest, harassment, extortion and ill-treatment since Operation Usalama Watch began in early April 2014. Over a thousand individuals have been forcibly relocated to overcrowded, insecure refugee camps. Hundreds of others have been deported back to Somalia, a country that has been in conflict for 22 years. Amnesty International is not aware of any Somali arrested during this counter-terror operation who has been charged with terrorism related offences.
