What’s the problem?

On 25 September 2022, poet and activist Artyom Kamardin took part in an activist poetry reading in Moscow. The event was to protest against the troop mobilization to replenish Russian forces fighting in Ukraine.

The next day, armed police raided the apartment of Artyom and his partner. During the search, Artyom was allegedly subjected to torture, including sexual violence. His lawyer was denied access to him. Despite sustaining injuries, including a concussion, Artyom was refused hospitalization.

Kamardin was arrested and charged with “inciting hatred”. In March 2023, he was also charged with “undermining national security”. On 28 December 2023, he was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Artyom Kamardin is a countercultural poet and conceptual artist known for his sharp critique of social injustice and war. Before his arrest, he worked as an engineer and designer of optical sights and night vision devices. Artyom has been writing anti-war poetry since 2014.

While in detention, Artyom’s health has deteriorated significantly. He faces worsening chronic back pain, headaches, dizziness, and sleep disorders. Despite his family’s efforts, he is being denied adequate healthcare. But he is optimistic, advocating for freedom of expression and finds comfort in drawing.
