Free Tunisia “Conspiracy Case” Defendants
Tunisian authorities recently arrested human rights lawyer Ayachi Hammami, opposition figure Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, and political activist Chaima Issa solely for their peaceful political opposition. They are among 34 unjustly sentenced individuals following a politically motivated sham trial. Call on the Tunisian authorities to quash the unjust convictions against all defendants in the so-called “conspiracy case” and immediately release all those detained solely for exercising their human rights.
What is the problem?
On 28 November, the Tunis Court of Appeal upheld the convictions and harsh prison sentences ranging from five to 45 years against 34 individuals in the so-called “conspiracy case”. Those convicted include prominent human rights lawyer Ayachi Hammami, historic opposition figure Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, and vocal political activist Chaima Issa who were tried on politically motivated charges.
These unjust convictions were issued after a bogus trial based on unfounded terrorism and conspiracy charges and plagued by serious fair-trial violations. For instance, proceedings were held remotely, and Defendants were denied their right to appear in person in court. Additionally, Tunisian authorities targeted and intimidated lawyers representing the defendants such as lawyer Ayachi Hammami who was initially representing defendants before being charged himself.
The Court of Appeal’s decision is an illustration of the weaponization of the justice system against political dissent. The “conspiracy case” is part of a wider crackdown on the rule of law and human rights in Tunisia where authorities continue their relentless campaign to silence all forms of dissent, dismantle institutional safeguards and establish a climate of repression.
What can you do to help?
Call on Tunisian authorities to immediately quash all unjust convictions and sentences against Ayachi Hammami, Chaima Issa, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, and all other 31 defendants in the so-called “conspiracy case”.
