Free Ruth López

Lawyer and human rights defender Ruth López is a prisoner of conscience. Add your name to call for her immediate and unconditional release.

What’s the problem?

Ruth López has dedicated her life to defending justice. A lawyer, teacher and human rights defender, Ruth has spent years speaking out against corruption and human rights abuses in El Salvador. She also mentored young lawyers and activists, believing that accountability and the rule of law matter.

But defending human rights has become increasingly dangerous.

In May 2025, Ruth was arrested at her home. Her family did not know where she was for 40 hours. More than a year later, she remains in pretrial detention and is being denied the right to a fair trial and regular access to her family or lawyer.

Ruth is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for exercising her human rights.

By adding your name, you’ll join thousands of people around the world calling on the Salvadoran authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ruth López and drop all charges against her.

It only takes 30 seconds to sign.
