Demand Justice for Juan López
Since 2015, Juan López and activists in Tocoa, Honduras, have fought to protect local rivers and a national park from mining and energy projects. In 2024, Juan was shot dead by a masked gunman. The alleged hitman and his accomplices have been charged and are in pre-trial detention. Those who ordered Juan’s murder have not been held accountable. Take action now to demand justice.
What’s the problem?
No one should pay with their life for protecting the planet. Juan López was a loving father and husband. Since 2015, he tirelessly defended his local environment in northern Honduras from mining and energy projects which have threatened local rivers, forests and the Carlos Escaleras Mejía National Park. Local communities fear that the projects put the surrounding ecosystem and water quality at serious risk.
Juan and fellow activists founded the Tocoa Municipal Committee for the Defence of Common and Public Goods to peacefully challenge the legality of the projects. Because of their activism they’ve been harassed, threatened and criminalized by authorities. Many committee members have been arrested and imprisoned. Some have been killed.
On 14 September 2024, a masked gunman shot Juan dead in his car as he was leaving church. The alleged shooter and two alleged accomplices have been charged with murder and are being held in pretrial detention. But those suspected of ordering Juan’s murder have not been held accountable.
Juan died defending our planet – your voice can help stop the next tragedy.
